On March 25, 2020, Officer Derek Chauvin, of the Minneapolis Police Department, knelt on the neck of George Floyd for 8 minutes and 46 seconds causing his death. The city of Minneapolis denied the excessive force used against George Floyd, but with the video evidence shot by 17-year-old Darnella Frazier, the public witnessed the truth. George Floyd was murdered at the hands of the police. Echoing the last words of Eric Garner, “I Can’t Breathe,” George Floyd showed no resistance against Officer Derek Chauvin, but he was still murdered. Derek Chauvin has been charged with third degree murder and manslaughter. Floyd was 46 years old.
On March 13, 2020, Breonna Taylor was in her bed in Louisville, Kentucky when Louisville Metro Police Department officers charged into her home and shot her 8 times in her sleep. The LMPD officers were searching for someone who was not in her home, and they entered the home without knocking. They were in the wrong house. The person they were looking for was already in police custody. The officers have not been fired or convicted. Taylor was 26 years old.
On February 23, 2020, Ahmaud Arbery was jogging in Glynn County, Georgia when he was hunted down and shot in the back by Gregory and Travis McMichael. The murder was recorded by a third accomplice, William Bryan. The Glynn County Police Department was advised by the local District Attorney to make no arrests. However, after the video went viral, the McMichaels were charged with felony murder and aggravated assault; Bryan was charged with felony murder and attempted false imprisonment. Arbery was 25 years old.
